The original intent of this page was to satisfy the BUSINESS component of CORE 4. This is the commitment to discover something new and then declare it to the world. I did this from mid-January through the end of June. On July 1st, 2019, this page will track the progress around my 90-Day Challenges. Every day I will post something (at the end of the day), to highlight ONE achievement I made that moved me forward in my 90-Day Challenge goals in any of the main areas of focus (Body, Being, Balance and Business).
Wednesday, September 4, 2019. Back to the office after a four-day “weekend”. Went to the gym and listened to a podcast by Jon Acuff. I’m doing his September/January Challenge.
Tuesday, September 3, 2019. Dropped my oldest daughter at college today. This is her sophomore year.
Monday, September 2, 2019. Labor Day.
Sunday, September 1, 2019. Continued to work on my magnet friction feeder. Happy with the results thus far but still far from “working”
Saturday, August 31, 2019. Friction feeder development continues.
Friday, August 30, 2019. Friction feeder development continues.
Thursday, August 29, 2019. Day 2 of the Digital Summit. Enjoying the speakers and workshops.
Wednesday, August 28, 2019. Day 1 of the Chicago Digital Summit conference at McCormick Place. This is my third annual pilgrimage to the event. Check out their website for more information and calendar (it’s a travelling conference and is probably coming to a town near you).
Tuesday, August 27, 2019. Friction feeder development continues. I created a cardboard prototype and continued to research parts and supplies needed.
Monday, August 26, 2019. I need to purchase equipment for my company to improve efficiency. Unfortunately, the piece of equipment I need is $13,000. Call me crazy, but I’m going to try and build it myself. It’s called a friction feeder and it’s supposed to “feed” magnets and place them on my postcards under a conveyor belt.
Sunday, August 25, 2019. Profit First was supposed to happen on Friday so I did it today. Totals are getting higher but I’m still not there yet.
Saturday, August 24, 2019. Website refinements.
Friday, August 23, 2019. Planning
Thursday, August 22, 2019. Email updates and Ontraport campaign fixes.
Wednesday, August 21, 2019. Trying to figure out my dashboard in order to measure various KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators). I believe I’m increasing the number of leads but I really need empirical data to support that “feeling”. Tracking the number of forms completed my prospects is the way to track this.
Tuesday, August 20, 2019. Book development. I have my designer create a cover for the book and I spent time researching how to publish and sell. I will likely create a page on my blog to advertise and provide “instructions” on how to use it.
Monday, August 19, 2019. Visit to the gym. Oh, I’m planning on publishing a book. Not really a book but rather a journal that combines CORE4 with a journal and day planning. I did something like this earlier in the year for my own use. I think I could turn this into a book and sell on Amazon. Not looking to generate a revenue stream but rather leverage the fact that I set a goal to publish a book. Amazon provides EVERYTHING to accomplish this goal.
Sunday, August 18, 2019. Family time. Menu planning.
Saturday, August 17, 2019. Fun with friends (Grayslake Summer Days)
Friday, August 16, 2019. Grayslake Summer Days.
Thursday, August 15, 2019. StoryBrand: website revisions to incorporate the SB philosophy. I’m really happy with the way this turned out. I’ve been focused on this for the past couple of days. Here’s a link to the website if you’re interested: www.NewMoverChurchPostcards.com.
Wednesday, August 14, 2019. Changes to website. StoryBrand.
Tuesday, August 13, 2019. Changes to website. StoryBrand.
Monday, August 12, 2019. Realigned my Profit First budget system (business). Worked on bi-monthly amounts into my OpEx account. On Friday I was supposed to my bi-monthly allocations but honestly my Primary Account is well below where it should be. Today I’m going to be processing my credit card orders and when they have been debited into my account, then I will do my “10th of the month” allocations. This transition is taking a little longer than I expected. I haven’t got the system down. I’m not sure this is normal. I had predicted 3 months to be fully functional but I’m still frustrated that it’s taking this long.
Sunday, August 11, 2019. Family time.
Saturday, August 10, 2019. Family time.
Friday, August 9, 2019. Emphasis today is on StoryBrand. Worked on lead generation system inside my CRM (Ontraport).
Thursday, August 8, 2019. Stalled. Ugh.
Wednesday, August 7, 2019. Stalled. Ugh.
Tuesday, August 6, 2019. Blog Post.
Monday, August 5, 2019. Update to the family billing structure. I set up paperless billing with three cards. I also set-up weekly withdraws to said accounts in an effort to accelerate debt repayment.
Sunday, August 4, 2019. Home project (fireplace).
Saturday, August 3, 2019. Home project (fireplace).
Friday, August 2, 2019. Gym visit. Also watched a Great Courses video in an attempt to get caught up as I’m falling behind.
Thursday, August 1, 2019. Profit First; review of Business bank accounts.
Wednesday, July 31, 2019. Donald Miller podcast. I have a love/hate relationship with his podcasts. I truly enjoy his guests but the style of discussion is rather irritating in that he actually talks more than his guest. He dominates the discussion. The first 6 – 8 minutes is mindless banter with his co-host J.J. Peterson. When it comes to his co-host, his quirky (aka irritating) laugh and voice isn’t made for a podcast. Don’t get me wrong, he seems like a nice enough fellow and I’m sure his laugh is infectious if I was having a beer with him at a pub – but it just doesn’t work on a podcast. I tend to skip the first few minutes to avoid the idle banter. Once inside the discussion, it’s hard not to get irritated that Miller frequently uses the platform to further promote his opinions/ideas, etc. OVER that of the person he is interviewing. He DOES have good ideas but the spotlight should be on his guest. He just talks and shares MORE than the person he is with. He’s not a good listener. Just my two cents on the topic.
Tuesday, July 30, 2019. Profit First review (update spreadsheet).
Monday, July 29, 2019. Gym workout (Body).
Sunday, July 28, 2019. Daughters birthday! Celebrations with the family.
Saturday, July 27, 2019. Family outing to the Madison Farmers Market.
Friday, July 26, 2019. Payroll processing day! Based on the amount in my Payroll Holding account, I ran my payroll. I use Gusto as my payroll processing company. Truthfully, I have not adhered to any sort of payroll processing system to date. I pull distributions from my company when I need them – it’s not a good system. Implementing Profit System is supposed to course correct this. So, I was able to process my payroll based on the amount in my Payroll Holding account today. Working the system!
Thursday, July 25, 2019. Today is allocation day! The Profit First system calls for a bi-monthly distribution of funds. This occurs on the 10th and 25th. Even though I officially started this on July 1st, I really wasn’t able (ready) to do this on the 10th. The challenge doing it today is that I already took a distribution earlier in the week to cover some bills which significantly depleted the funds available in my primary account. Regardless, I did it anyway (it’s a work in progress). 65% of the available funds were transferred into my Payroll holding account. 30% was transferred into my OpEx account. 2.5% in Profit and 2.5% into Debt Recovery. My Profit and Debt Recovery accounts are held at different banks and I do not actively monitor these amounts. To track the distributions, I created a Google Docs spreadsheet and recorded the amounts. I wrote formulas to calculate the percentage/amount splits. It worked perfectly. Moving forward, the goal is significantly increase the numbers on this spreadsheet!
Wednesday, July 24, 2019. Financial assessment today. My business Profit System is almost up and running. I have my four bank accounts: primary income, production, OpEx (operation expenses) and payroll. I’m pleased at the transition so far but I need to be better about payroll planning as I’m still distributing funds from primary account as needed rather than using the percentage allocation I designed.
Tuesday, July 23, 2019. Started making more an effort to track my calorie intake trying to pinpoint my apparent “failure” in seeing measurable results thus far. I use the Samsung Health app on my phone (which is tied to my Samsung Gear watch) to track exercise and calorie intake. Read some articles that highlights some changes I could make: better calorie tracking, increase my protein intake and eliminate evening snacking. Today was a good day on that front but it requires a significant amount of conscious thinking which is not always easy (especially not easy for the long term). I have to create this habit – and that takes times.
Monday, July 22, 2019. Ugh day. Feeling completely stalled in TWO areas. I’ve actually gained weight since I started this challenge despite real effort to “eat less and exercise more”. I have no words and I’m feeling very defeated. I’m tracking calories and exercise and the tracking data does suggest I should be losing – but I’m not! I’m at a complete loss. Also, with regard to financial issues – a major car repair is going to have a significant impact in my debt repayment goals. Very frustrated.
Sunday, July 21, 2019. My youngest daughter is celebrating her birthday next week. As part of her birthday festivities, we had 15 of her friends over to watch a movie in the backyard with a screen and movie projector. It was a lot of fun.
Saturday, July 20, 2019. Went out with friends. Not sure this fits under my 90-day Challenge Goals under the Balance category but it was a fun night out for all. I’m counting it.
Friday, July 19, 2019. Updating New Mover Church Postcards website under the StoryBrand framework. Also completed a history lesson.
Thursday, July 18, 2019. Updating New Mover Church Postcards website under the StoryBrand framework.
Wednesday, July 17, 2019. Updating New Mover Church Postcards website under the StoryBrand framework.
Tuesday, July 16, 2019. A good gym workout, another Donald Miller podcast AND a history lesson.
Monday, July 15, 2019. Story Brand day today. Morning started with another Donald Miller podcast and then an hour working through his Story Brand worksheet. This really could be a game changer.
Sunday, July 14, 2019. Early morning start watching the cricket world cup final between England and New Zealand. Will go down as the greatest one day game in history. Absolutely gutted that NZ lost the game at the death. Found myself unable to release feelings of utter disappointment. Sports can be so cruel. In terms of pursuing my 90-Day Challenge goals, I had let it go today.
Saturday, July 13, 2019. The weekend is tough to keep pace with my 110 oz of daily water. I was well under this today. On the upside, I went for a 2 mile run and listened to another Donald Miller podcast. This guy is good. Fabulous interview with Scott Hamilton.
Friday, July 12, 2019. Profit First and Story Brand are dominating my focus today. I’m confident that both of these systems will lead to significant benefits.
Thursday, July 11, 2019. My goal for BODY is to drink at least 110 ounces everyday. I’m achieving this goal… and I’m earning steps for frequent bathroom visits.
Wednesday, July 10, 2019. The Profit System is based on the allocation of funds on the 10th and 25th. Today is the 10th so I should be doing just that… but I can’t. I still have too many automatic payments coming out of my main income account. Transferring funds out of this account (to zero) would leave it exposed and overdrawn. The transition period will take a while so I’m not too concerned. My focus today was completing the first module of the Story Brand workbook.
Tuesday, July 9, 2019. Made some banking transitions (business) as part of Profit First implementation. Continuing to listen to Donald Miller podcasts. I am enjoying his podcast with one minor point or complaint: he talks more than the person he is interviewing! What’s up with that? I tried to listen to his chat with Dave Ramsey but I grew increasingly frustrated because he wouldn’t let Ramsey talk! If you did an analysis on the number of words spoken by the two, it would be 80/20 (Miller/Ramsey). NOT an ideal interview by any means. I know I’m giving Miller a hard time because he is trying to combine teachings within the interview which is of value, but if you confuse, you lose. Quote of the day: When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new (Dalai Lama).
Monday, July 8, 2019. Completed a history lesson and completed the workbook. 4 lessons complete; 32 to go! Also transferred several business accounts to the new OpEx (Profit First) checking account. I expect this transition to take 4 – 6 weeks.
Sunday, July 7th, 2019. Completed a 3.6 mile around a local park in the morning AND 60 minutes playing tennis will my daughter at the school tennis courts. Worked up quite a sweat and I loved it. I much prefer this kind of workout. I’m feeling it now though and I’m sure I’ll feel it even more tomorrow.
Saturday, July 6, 2019. Completed a 2.7 mile run/walk around my neighborhood. And I listened to a fantastic podcast from Donald Miller (http://buildingastorybrand.com/episode-2/).I also started a food diary on my phone (using the Samsung Health app). I’m pretty good at starting these; not so good at staying with it.
Friday, July 5, 2019. I’m staying with Ontraport for the time being. Today I focused on my canned email templates inside Gmail. Made some revisions, deleted some old ones and go things in order.
Thursday, July 4, 2019.Not exactly a part of my 90-Day plans but I spent way to much time thinking about changing my CRM (currently Ontraport). I checked out a couple (10?). I spend way too much tome down these rabbit holes.
Wednesday, July 3, 2019. Growing pains with the new family budget. The goal was to allocate a fixed amount each month but found that it went a lot quicker than expected and it’s causing discomfort. That said, change is supposed to a little uncomfortable and it is to be expected during this transition stage.
Tuesday, July 2, 2019. One of my Balance goals (family), is focused on reducing debt. I created a Google spreadsheet that listed my debts and calculated the actual dollar amount in order to meet my 90-Day outcome of reducing household debt by 7.5%.
Monday, July 1st, 2019. Today is the first day of my third 90-Day challenge. Today I kicked off my watching the first set of videos in the StoryBrand framework.
Sunday, June 30, 2019. Change of pace announcement! Since mid-January, I’ve used this Discover & Declare page as part of my CORE 4 commitment. It’s something that I’ve found difficult to maintain a constant level of enthusiasm. The point behind Discover & Declare is to learn something new every day and then declare it the world. I did this via my blog, virtually every day. It’s half way through the year and I’m losing interest. So, starting tomorrow, I’m changing the focus of this page. I’m going to commit to using this as a type of online journal and will post something every day (at the end of the day) with something that happened during the day that advanced any one of my 90-Day goals.
Saturday, June 29, 2019. On Monday, I’m starting a new 90-Day Challenge. Our brains may have an internal guidance system for reaching goals. Research from neuroscience suggests that our brains use the neurotransmitter dopamine as an internal guidance system to reach goals. An animal study showed that the dopamine signal in the brain gets stronger as the goal gets closer. It’s sort of a “Marco Polo” effect that influences choices made to direct action toward a goal, and adjusts expectations about how close or far away the goal really is.
Friday, June 28, 2019. With my new accounts set up, I finalized the percentage splits I’m aiming for. I can’t do a lot until my new debit cards arrive.
Thursday, June 27, 2019. Today I went to the bank to talk about setting up new bank accounts as part of this new profit system in implement for my business. Two new checking accounts and one new savings account.
Wednesday, June 26, 2019. Still suffering from serious procrastination. I’m completing tasks at work, but they are taking 5x as long as they should.
Tuesday, June 25, 2019. Feeling incredibly stressed today and this is resulting in serious procrastination. I should be working on invoices today but I’m doing everything I can to avoid. I know it would only take a couple of hours. Procrastination is often confused with laziness, but they are very different. Procrastination is an active process – you choose to do something else instead of the task that you know you should be doing. In contrast, laziness suggests apathy, inactivity and an unwillingness to act.
Monday, June 24, 2019. What’s marketing funnel? A funnel is a series of pages and steps linked together so that one step triggers the next. A funnel allows you to gather hundreds of qualified leads and weed out those who are not your ideal client until you are left those who are ready to buy.
Sunday, June 23, 2019. Benefits of procrastination? Procrastination gives you time to consider divergent ideas, to think in nonlinear ways, and to make unexpected leaps.
Saturday, June 22. Stress relief #3: Guided imagery is like taking a short vacation in your mind.1 It can involve imaging yourself being in your “happy place”—maybe picturing yourself sitting on a beach, listening to the waves, smelling the ocean, and feeling the warm sand underneath you. Guided imagery can be done with a recording where you listen to someone walk you through a peaceful scene. Or, once you know how to do it yourself, you can practice guided imagery on your own. Simply close your eyes for a minute and walk yourself through a peaceful scene. Think about all the sensory experiences you’d engage in and allow yourself to feel as though you’re really there. After a few minutes, open your eyes and return to the present moment.
Friday, June 21, 2019. Stress relief #2: Progressive muscle relaxation involves relaxing all the muscles in your body, group by group.3 To practice, you can start with a few deep breaths. Then, practice tightening and relaxing each muscle group, starting with your forehead and moving down to your toes. With practice, you’ll learn to recognize tension and tightness in your muscles and you’ll be able to relax more easily. Each time you practice, however, you should experience a feeling of relaxation sweeping through your body.
Thursday, June 20, 2019. Stress relief #1: Just focusing on your breath or changing the way you breathe can make a big difference to your overall stress level. Breathing techniques can calm your body and your brain in just a few minutes.4 The best news is, no one around you will even know you’re doing them. So whether you’re in a stressful meeting or you’re sitting in a crowded theater, breathing exercises could be key to reducing your stress.
Wednesday, June 19, 2019. Gambling generates more revenue each year than movies, spectator sports, theme parks, cruise ships and recorded music combined.
Tuesday, June 18, 2019. 5% of the people who buy lottery tickets account for 51% of all tickets sold.
Monday, June 17, 2019. “It doesn’t matter how many times you fail. It doesn’t matter how many times you almost get it right. No one is going to know or care about your failures, and neither should you. All you have to do is learn from them and those around you because all that matters in business is that you get it right once. Then everyone can tell you how lucky you are.” Mark Cuban
Sunday, June 16, 2019. Father’s Day was founded in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there.
Saturday, June 15, 2019. I went to a fundraising function last night. It was for a family looking to raise funds to assist in the adoption process. Shocked and appalled to learn that it costs about $40,000 for a family to adopt a child.
Friday, June 14, 2019. “I think failure is nothing more than life‘s way of nudging you that you are off course. My attitude to failure is not attached to outcome, but I’m not trying. It is liberating. Most people attach failure to something not working out or how people perceive you. This way, it is about answering to yourself.“ Sara Blakely Billionaire creator of Spanx.
Thursday, June 13, 2019. In the early days, most credit cards were actually “charge” cards, balances of which had to be paid in full every month. The concept of carrying a balance from month to month (aka revolving credit) didn’t come along until 1959.
Wednesday, June 12, 2019. I’m thinking of changing banks as part of my implementation of Profit First system. Did you know the credit card is almost 100 years old, with the first being issued in the 1920s? These early examples were location-specific charge cards that could be used only at the gas stations or hotels that issued them.
Tuesday, June 11, 2019. Found a great online resource that could easily qualify as a worthy BEING outcome/goal as part of a 90-Day Challenge. www.edx.org offers a bevy of online self-paced courses that can be completed over 4 – 12 weeks (2 – 10 hours a week). There are a number of humanities courses that allow deeper exploration into religion, philosophy and history to name a few. edx is founded by Harvard and MIT and the courses are FREE!
Monday, June 10, 2019. I’m back. I took a break. Quote for the day: We do not see things the way they are; we see things the way we are. I don’t know who to credit this quote to. A friend posted it on my Facebook feed and I saved it.
Sunday, May 26, 2019. I heard this the other day during guided meditation (with Andy). Thoughts are like rainbows. They appear out of nowhere, stay a while and then disappear as quickly as they appear. They seem tangible because you can see (identify) with them but if you could touch it, your hand would go right through it. I’m guilty of spending too much time with thoughts. I’m a chronic overthinker. It’s often paralyzing as I get so caught up in them. And we all know that thoughts become feelings, and feelings create behavior through words and actions. And those behaviors create our results. I’ll be looking to explore this concept in my next 90-Day Challenge.
Saturday, May 25, 2019. Discovering and declaring with those around me after PickleCon.
Friday, May 24, 2019. Discovering and declaring with those around me today at PickleCon.
Thursday, May 23, 2019. Discovering and declaring with those around me today at PickleCon.
Wednesday, May 22, 2019. Discovering and declaring with those around me today at PickleCon.
Tuesday, May 21, 2019.
Monday, May 20, 2019.
Sunday, May 19, 2019.
Saturday May 18, 2019. I heard someone say “what in the Sam Hill!”. Made me laugh. I think I’ve heard it before in a movie. Can’t remember. I had no idea what it meant but it sounded funny. It’s an America thing and I had to look it up. Sam Hill is an American English slang phrase, a euphemism or minced oath for “the devil” or “hell”.
Friday May 17, 2019. The second half of the CORE4 routine (see yesterday for the first two steps) is focused on the external (whereas the initial stage of Body and Being are internal). Balance is the connection you have with others, namely your spouse and kids. This achieved by some form of communication (I use text) to simply “touch” them with a thought, note or affirmation. The Business component is the fourth and final category. The desire to discover something new and share or teach it to others. RIGHT NOW YOU ARE READING MY DISCOVER & DECLARE page on my blog 😉
Thursday May 16, 2019. Starting the day off right: 10 minutes on the treadmill (1-mile), a green drink, 10 minutes of meditation (Headspace) and journalling (I use the 5-minute journal app on my phone). One of the keys to success is starting with a solid morning/foundation routine. I’ve been following the above routine for almost six months. Results are glacial but profound. What’s your morning routine?
Wednesday, May 15, 2019. I’m working on a gap map. It’s a structured way to assess where you are today in areas such as a body, business, etc. and where you want to go. The goal is to identify the gap and then sort out plans to bridge that gap through targeted action.
Tuesday, May 14, 2019. Ramsey supports the debt snowball method, where debtors pay off their lowest balance debt first instead of paying off their highest interest rate debt first. While this approach has been criticized by some, research done by the Kellogg School of Management has found that the debt snowball method is generally effective. The small victories give debtors motivation. A 2016 study by Harvard Business School found that people who used the snowball method to pay off their smallest account first, paid down more of their debt than those who used other methods.
Monday, May 13, 2019. 19% have $0 saved to cover an emergency expenses; 31% have less than $500 in emergency savings. Can you tell I’m budgeting? I’m actually working on ways to improve the cash flow for my business and much of the content in the Profit First book could easily apply to household budgeting.
Sunday, May 12, 2019. Only 30% of Americans have a long-term financial plan that includes savings and investment goals
Saturday, May 13, 2019. How long does a cough normally last? Coughs associated with a cold or the flu tend to last a week or 2, most clearing up within about 3 weeks. Mine is getting back – and it’s taken 3 weeks.
Friday, May 10, 2019. Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations.” Steve Jobs
Thursday, May 9, 2019. Champions League & Europa League: English clubs make history by taking four final places
Wednesday, May 8, 2019. Similar to the game yesterday, Spurs made a dramatic comeback to book a place in the final against Liverpool.
Tuesday, May 7, 2019. Currently watching the semi-final of UEFA Champions League. Liverpool takes the lead 4-0 against Barcelona (4-3 on aggregate). Not getting much done this afternoon… I can’t fucking believe it. Liverpool won! Beating Barcelona and the mighty Messi. I’m still shaking having the watched the last 15 minutes without breathing. Followed and supported Liverpool since I was a wee lad and this feeling is magical. Looking forward to the final next month (being played in Madrid, Spain).
Monday, May 6, 2019. One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our windows today. Dale Carnegie.
Sunday, May 5, 2019. The UEFA Champions League was founded in 1955, but the current format has been around since 1992. It was formally known as the European Champion Clubs’ Cup.
Saturday, May 4, 2019 Tony Britten wrote the UEFA Champions League anthem in 1992 when the competition got rebranded. It is an adaption of George Frideric’s Zadok the Priest.
Friday, May 3, 2019. A financially healthy company is a result of a series of small daily financial wins, not one big moment. Profitability is not an event; it’s a habit. WHY. Mike Michalowicz.
Thursday, May 2, 2019. In 2016 the average household earned $74,664. Average expenditures were $57,311, leaving $17,353 in free cash flow.
Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Started reading a new book the other day. Profit First by Mike Michalowicz. The book examines an alternative principal to how business owners treat profit, sales and expenses. I originally got the audible version but think the printed version will probably serve me better.
Tuesday April 30, 2019. Ever wondered why the number of days in a month aren’t the same. Here’s why.
Monday, April 29, 2019. I use Zoom to connect with my accountability partners and business groups. It’s FREE.
Sunday, April 28, 2019. Google sheets is a traditional spreadsheet program but it resides in the cloud so it’s accessible anywhere. One of the nice features is the ability to create useful charts (graphs) and then embed those charts in a website. They’ll update when you make changes to the spreadsheet too.

Friday, April 26, 2019. Helping others succeed and achieve is one of the best ways to achieve success yourself. Steven Lanham. Haha, okay, so I think I heard something like this before but I love it and I’m taking the credit for my rewrite.
Thursday, April 25, 2019. Adults get an average of two to four colds per year, mostly between September and May.
Wednesday, April 24, 2019. Colds are minor infections of the nose and throat caused by more than 200 different viruses. Rhinovirus is the most common cause, accounting for 10 to 40 percent of colds. Other common cold viruses include coronavirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Tuesday, April 23, 2019. Check out my latest post to learn more about the Haka which is a traditional challenge performed by the New Zealand rugby team (the All Blacks) before international matches.
Monday, April 22, 2019. Easter Monday, also known as Bright Monday, Renewal Monday, Wet Monday, and Dyngus Day, is the Monday immediately after Easter Sunday. It is observed by many Christian groups, but primarily by the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions. It marks the beginning of Easter Week (Roman Catholic) / Bright Week (Eastern Orthodox).
Sunday, April 21, 2019. Easter is a Christian holiday celebrating the day Jesus Christ rose from the grave following his crucifixion on Good Friday. According to Matthew 28, on the third day after Christ’s death, an angel of the Lord came down from heaven to the tomb, rolled back the heavy stone that had been placed in front to prevent Christ’s disciples from moving his body. The guards fainted, and Jesus left the grave, heading towards Galilee to meet up with his disciples. We all know the story. What you don’t know is that according to the Bible, when Christ came back to life he didn’t come alone. In Matthew 27:52-53 the Bible says, “and the graves were opened, and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, and came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.” You might think that’s just a metaphor, but Bible Probe says you may want to think again.

In 1804, the cathedral was the site of the Coronation of Napoleon I as Emperor of France, and witnessed the baptism of Henri, Count of Chambord in 1821 and the funerals of several presidents of the Third French Republic.

Wednesday, April 10, 2019. Shortly after moving to San Francisco in October 2007, roommates and former schoolmates Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia could not afford the rent for their loft apartment. Chesky and Gebbia came up with the idea of putting an air mattress in their living room and turning it into a bed and breakfast. The goal at first was just “to make a few bucks”. In February 2008, Nathan Blecharczyk, Chesky’s former roommate, joined as the Chief Technology Officer and the third co-founder of the new venture, which they named AirBed & Breakfast. They put together a website which offered short-term living quarters, breakfast, and a unique business networking opportunity for those who were unable to book a hotel in the saturated market. The site Airbedandbreakfast.com officially launched on August 11, 2008. The founders had their first customers in town in the summer of 2008, during the Industrial Design Conference held by Industrial Designers Society of America, where travelers had a hard time finding lodging in the city.

Monday, April 1, 2019. In the UK, an April Fool joke is revealed by shouting “April fool!” at the recipient, who becomes the “April fool”. A study in the 1950s, by folklorists Iona and Peter Opie, found that in the UK, and in countries whose traditions derived from the UK, the joking ceased at midday. This continues to be the current practice with the holiday ceasing at noon, after which time it is no longer acceptable to play jokes. Ergo, a person playing a joke after midday is considered the “April fool” themselves.

An HTTP cookie (also called web cookie, Internet cookie, browser cookie, or simply cookie) is a small piece of data sent from a website and stored on the user’s computer by the user’s web browser while the user is browsing. Cookies were designed to be a reliable mechanism for websites to remember stateful information (such as items added in the shopping cart in an online store) or to record the user’s browsing activity (including clicking particular buttons, logging in, or recording which pages were visited in the past). They can also be used to remember arbitrary pieces of information that the user previously entered into form fields such as names, addresses, passwords, and credit card numbers.

Despite the etymology, the content can be accessed using any computer or similar device that can play media files. Use of the term “podcast” predated Apple’s addition of formal support for podcasting to the iPod, or its iTunes software

Saturday, March 16, 2019. Turning Green in Chicago (dyeing the Chicago River). The dyeing tradition became an annual thing nearly 60 years ago, in 1962, but its real origins go back even further. In the early days of his administration as Mayor of Chicago, Richard J. Daley was a man on a mission to develop the city’s riverfront area. There was just one problem: The river itself was a sewage-filled eyesore. In order to get to the bottom of the city’s pollution problem and pinpoint the exact places where waste was being discarded into the waterway (and by whom), Daley authorized the pouring of a special green dye into the river that would allow them to see exactly where dumping was occurring.

Wednesday, March 6, 2019. Emotional dependency is when a person allows others (like a significant other) to affect his or her feelings and emotions, and depends on them for happiness, etc. This is giving complete control to others over a person’s own emotions. This is unhealthy and can negatively impact self-esteem, since self-esteem is dependent on others. This is different from having a balanced relationship, where two people have interdependence and allow other to affect them only slightly emotionally.
Tuesday, March 5, 2019. Outcome Dependence. A social situation in which one person’s outcomes, including the rewards or punishments experienced, are determined in whole or in part by the actions of another person. Saturday, March 2, 2019. Difference between hard and soft serve ice cream: Soft serve ice cream has less milk fat and more air than harder ice cream. If soft serve ice cream has the right amount of air, it will have a whitish color. When air is added, the ice cream becomes fluffy and the large molecules allow it to reflect white light, which gives it a white color. This white color means the ice cream is of a better quality than soft serve ice cream with less air. If the ice cream does not have enough air, it will take on a yellowish color

Thursday, February 21, 2019. I used to think, based on a materials I had read, that it generally takes 21 – 30 days to form a new habit. Apparently, I’m wrong. Here’s an article that “is backed by science” that suggests on average it takes 2 months (66 days to be exact) to form a new habit. And how long it takes a new habit to form can vary widely depending on the behavior, the person, and the circumstances. Tuesday, February 19, 2019. Procrastination is one of my biggest enemies. Possible solution: It’s called The Ivy Lee Method and it has six steps:
- At the end of each work day, write down the six most important things you need to accomplish tomorrow. Do not write down more than six tasks.
- Prioritize those six items in order of their true importance.
- When you arrive tomorrow, concentrate only on the first task. Work until the first task is finished before moving on to the second task.
- Approach the rest of your list in the same fashion. At the end of the day, move any unfinished items to a new list of six tasks for the following day.
- Repeat this process every working day.

I’m using the next few days to reflect on my successes but also to plan my next 90-Day Challenge. If you’re new to goal setting, a 90-day goal challenge is a great way to test the water. Come up with a single goal that you plan to achieve in 90-days (personal or professional) and then highlight some 30 and 60-day milestones. Tuesday, February 12, 2019. Symptoms of Jet Lag: Travelers experiencing severe jet lag may feel lethargic during the afternoon, wide awake at night, and hungry during odd times. Headaches, irritability, and a lack of daytime focus make getting oriented in a new destination even more of a challenge.
Jet lag doesn’t only affect sleep; hunger strikes at odd times as your digestive system fires up based on your old time zone’s schedule. Meals eaten at regular times are less enjoyable and can even be harder to digest.
Monday, February 11, 2019. Jet lag is a physiological condition which results from alterations to the body’s circadian rhythms caused by rapid long-distance trans-meridian (east–west or west–east) travel. For example, someone flying from New York to London, i.e. from west to east, feels as if the time were five hours earlier than local time and said person travelling from London to New York, i.e. from east to west, feels as if the time were five hours later than local time. Jet lag was previously classified as one of the circadian rhythm sleep disorders.

Thursday, January 31, 2019. Making course corrections, Brian Tracy. Life is like an airplane journey. From the time you take off, you will be off course 99% of the time. All airplanes are off course 99% of the time. The purpose and role of the pilot and the avionics is to continually bring the plane back on course so that it arrives on schedule at its destination.
In life, you are the pilot of your own craft. To reach your destination of health, happiness, prosperity and a good life, you must do as a pilot does. You must first of all determine your destination. This requires clear, specific goals, written down, with plans to accomplish them for each day. Read the rest if the article here.

Tuesday, January 29, 2019: Goal setting… works: In early December, I set a 90-day Challenge (body) goal to run a mile in 8 min 45 seconds. Even though I loath running, I wanted a goal that would really challenge me and one I could track. I set the goal without any reference – I had no idea if it was realistic or not!
Well, after weeks and weeks and weeks of “training” to push myself and coming close several times – I actually did it. I ran a mile in 8 minutes and 39 seconds. It was surreal – I even had this incredible wave of emotion come over me; I almost burst into tears (seriously!). I was able to maintain my composure and jump off the treadmill before I was thrown off! Goal achieved – check!
Monday, January 28, 2019: The coldest temperature ever recorded in Chicago (city limits) is -27 degrees Fahrenheit. Apparently, we’re supposed to be getting close to that on Wednesday.

Friday, January 25, 2019. When I went to work this morning, the outside temperature was -4 degrees Fahrenheit. If I want to share this frightful news with friends and family in New Zealand, I have to convert to Celsius. Of course you could change the settings in your weather app, or you use the following formula: Deduct 32, then multiply by 5, then divide by 9. So -4 degrees Fahrenheit is about -20 degrees Celsius. Either way, brutally cold… and it’s supposed to be colder next week.
Thursday, January 24, 2019: Linking Instagram to Facebook. I know, I’m probably sharing something that EVERYBODY already knows – but I didn’t! I haven’t really used Instagram but thought I might give it a go. I wanted to be able to upload an image to Instagram and it show up on my Facebook feed too. It’s done in Instagram; go to your settings and click linked accounts. Tap Facebook and enter login info. Magic.

Tuesday, January 22, 2019: The Reticular Activating System (RAS). I consider myself a lifelong student when it comes to the Law of Attraction and I love it when I hear a different take on one of the principle concepts. The RAS is an internal system that acts like a filter. It filters IN circumstances, events, things, etc. that are in alignment with your beliefs. Think shopping on a clothing website: you filter your search results based on size, brand, color, fit, etc. which allows you to see the things you want to see. In life, you’ll see (and experience) things that match your internal filters. These internal beliefs are created over time so if you don’t like what you see (the results), maybe it’s time to change your filter (beliefs).
Monday, January 21, 2019: Overwhelm happens when the sheer volume of thoughts, feelings, tasks, and stimuli in our daily environment shifts our brain and nervous system into a reactive, stressed state. Five ways to reduce overwhelm in your life include measured breathing, writing it down, creating a routine, manage expectations and choosing which tasks to complete. Check out this link for more detailed information.
Sunday, January 20, 2019: “The only way to lasting change is to move toward a place of awareness”. I just finished Day 10 of the Anxiety meditation training inside of Headspace. There’s always a few minutes before and each guided meditation session where Andy introduces and closes out each session that I sometimes miss because I just want to “do meditation”. Andy dropped that little gem about awareness being a gradual process at the end of Day 10. So how do you generally gain awareness – is it a gradual process (slow) or an aha moment (fast)?
Saturday, January 19, 2019: The longest commercial airline, non-stop flight in the world is operated by Singapore Airlines and their non-stop service from Singapore to Newark, New Jersey. The flight covers 15,344 kilometers (8,285 miles). It takes about 18.5 hours. In two weeks I’ll be on the 17th longest flight: Chicago to Auckland. This covers 13,170 km (8,183 miles) in about 16.25 hours.
Friday, January 18, 2019: Do you know that Facebook is most alive on Wednesday around 3pm EST? Weekends record less activity with Sunday having the least amount of activity.
Thursday, January 17, 2019: The relationship between worrying and anxiety. Worrying is the “thinking” part. This is when you (perhaps obsessively) start thinking negative thoughts about a trigger (situation, future event, etc.). When this thinking part turns into a physical “feeling” (increased heart beat, sweating, etc.), that’s anxiety.
I am loving this series! Everyone should watch them, even if it is years later.
